This multimedia collage was originally formed on the floor of my dorm room at SUNY Purchase. By my sophomore year, at the liberal arts school just outside of NYC I had become fully immersed in hip hop, and dedicated my academic attention to Black Studies by creating my own major which had a focus in visual and performing arts. I was coming into my radicalism and began immediately putting it into my artwork. The distorted stars and the torn red stripes of US flag are cut into by strands of vibrant graffiti all of which is disrupted by a sista whose form is formed by various pieces of what we have to claim and protect as hip hop culture. This music and culture once had the power to connect and to disrupt and it can again. I AM HIP HOP.
